Ensuring safety and efficiency for Denver’s Platte River Bridge

Denver’s Platte River Bridge is a single-span pedestrian bridge with a unique design that poses distinctive challenges relating to structural movement. To ensure the bridge remains safe and operational, the City and County of Denver embarked on a pioneering project with Stantec, a global engineering firm, to monitor the condition of the bridge. This innovative project uses iTwin IoT software from Bentley Systems, along with 16 wireless sensors from Move Solutions, to remotely monitor the bridge and provide continuous access to reliable data and analysis on the health of the structure.

Building monitoring after the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake

On the 6th of February 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in southern Turkey near the northern border of Syria. […] 200,000 buildings were destroyed, leaving the community in a state of vulnerability. To bring them some support in this critical situation, Emmanuel Durand partnered with Move Solutions, who donated the necessary sensors for the project to monitor and analyze the structural conditions of two hospitals and a large student residence after the earthquake. That enabled the collection of valuable data for post-earthquake analysis and facilitated the return of people to these essential facilities. […]

Wireless tilt monitoring of Beirut silos

The Beirut Grain Silos, 42 cylindrical reinforced concrete structures 48 meters high containing 85% of Lebanon’s grain reserves, was built in the port of the capital in the late 1960s. On August 4, 2020, the tremendous explosion that occurred in the warehouse of storage just 85m away from the Silos caused enormous damage, impacting the city along a 600m radius. The part of the structure facing east collapsed completely, while the one facing west resisted without collapsing, preventing the shock wave of the explosion from reaching the western part of the city with all its original strength.

Static-dynamic SHM and water monitoring for quay wall safety

In August 2022, Academy Geomatics Ltd started conducting automated monitoring with a total station and prism for a local council. There were concerns that the quay wall might have been moving and the monitoring was aimed at verifying that. Since day trips to monitor the wall were not a long enough period of time to attest the consequences of the tidal effect on the wall, it was proposed to set up an automated total station and leave it there 24/7 for a month, receiving data every 5 minutes to accurately show the tidal effect on the structure. […]

Historic building monitoring

Wireless structural health monitoring of the Colosseum

The Colosseum is a historical structure of inestimable cultural value both for Italy and for the whole world. It is, therefore, necessary to preserve and protect the structural integrity of the historic structures that are incorporated into a constantly developing urban context such as that of the Italian capital.

A tender has been announced by the “Ministry of Cultural Heritage” and the contracting authority for the project is the “Parco Archeologico del Colosseo“. The aim of this monitoring project is to be the pilot project for processing the monitoring of the Colosseum and verifying the satellite data already acquired and being studied on the ground.

Dynamic and static load tests of a metal bridge on a construction site

temporary metal bridge was built to join the two banks of the river that divides the construction site of the new bridge in San Lorenzo di Sebato, in Trentino Alto Adige. The main function of this temporary structure, on a construction site, is to allow the passage of vehicles and heavy vehicles necessary during the development of the construction site.
The purpose of this construction site is to build the new bridge that will connect the Pusteria state road with the new access to Val Badia. The structure of this new bridge is 144 meters long and 1,040 tons heavy.

Monitoring a construction site to provide rail access to the depot

As part of the Transport for Wales rail system, a rolling stock depot was built at Taffs Well which required a bridge to connect it to the rail station. Before building the new bridge a sheet pile wall had to be installed in order to retain earth and other filling material during piling activities.

The monitoring system provided by Move Solutions through one of their UK supplier, Korec Group,  collects real-time data of the sheet pile wall, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The aim is to identify any changes in the behaviour and position of the wall so as to avoid structural failure after its removal. […]

Bridge monitoring

Tilt and vibration monitoring of a railway bridge

The bridge located on the Scrivia river, one of the arteries of the homonymous valley, is a structure all about 160 meters long and is divided into 7 spans with lowered arches, in reinforced concrete. Built-in the early 1900s, it served as a road and rail bridge for years. In 1980 the extension of the bridge over the Scrivia (structure in reinforced concrete with slab and beams) was carried out and also a shift of the railway network to its own site, thus splitting the two uses.

To monitor the health of the bridge, a wireless sensor network was installed consisting of DECK to monitor displacement and Triaxial Tiltmeter to monitor the inclination of the […]

Dynamic monitoring of the Vespucci Bridge in Florence

The Vespucci bridge is one of the central bridges of Florence that allows you to join the San Frediano district to the rest of the city, separated by the Arno river. It is a structure in c.a.p. arch divided into 3 spans, with an overall length of 162m. Designed by Riccardo Morandi and built between 1954-1957, suffers from deterioration of the concrete, like many works of the time. This deterioration has affected the two piers even more markedly, especially the one on the left (San Frediano side) due to the erosion of the riverbed by the currents of the Arno river. This structural deterioration required continuous monitoring and safety works. […]

Wireless monitoring of the Zambeccari bridge in Tuscany

The Zambeccari bridge in Pontremoli was built in the early 1900s on the Verde stream. It is a reinforced concrete bridge developed on two spans of the same length. In May 2020, the closure to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic is ordered for structural checks. The objective of the temporary closure of the structure is to clarify the state of health of the bridge and its structural degradation. After verifying the state of the Zambeccari bridge by the Vega Engineering Company, the structure was reopened with a reduced carriageway. Vega has prepared, with the approval of the municipality, the insertion of a continuous and remote structural monitoring system.
