Rail track geometry and displacement monitoring
Track cant, twist, displacement and elevation changes in real time to detect anomalies and preserve railway integrity.

Why monitor railways?
Railway tracks are subject to deformation due to ground movement, traffic loads, thermal expansion, and structural settlement. Small geometric deviations can escalate into major safety hazards, affecting operational continuity and passenger safety. Continuous monitoring of rail alignment and stability is essential to ensure long-term performance and avoid critical disruptions.

Bridge Monitoring
Tilt and Vibration Monitoring of a Railway Bridge
The bridge located on the Scrivia river, one of the arteries of the homonymous valley, is a structure all about 160 meters long and is divided into 7 spans with lowered arches, in reinforced concrete. Built-in the early 1900s, it served as a road and rail bridge for years. In 1980 the extension of the bridge over the Scrivia (structure in reinforced concrete with slab and beams) was carried out and also a shift of the railway network to its own site, thus splitting the two uses. To monitor the health of the bridge, a wireless sensor network was installed consisting of DECK to monitor displacement and Triaxial Tiltmeter to monitor the inclination of the […]

Historical Building Monitoring
Structural Health Monitoring of St Mark's Basilica in Venice
In order to protect St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice from high water, it was decided to build transparent glass sheets around it. Since the laying of the glass included excavations to be carried out very close to the Basilica, Digital Rilievi was chosen to monitor the two outermost columns of the façade and the two Pillars of Acre (Pilastri Acritani) placed on the right side of the Basilica, using Move Solutions sensors.

Railway and Landslip Monitoring
North York Moors Railway Monitoring
This project has been conducted by Academy Geomatics Ltd in collaboration with the North York Moors National Park Authority. The goal was to establish a comprehensive, real-time monitoring system to assess the behaviour of a landslip along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, in order to ensure the safety and longevity of this crucial transportation link. Finding a suitable location for a total station proved challenging, as there wasn’t a spot that was both clear of the train tracks and had a view of the landslip. The valley offered limited stable ground for securing reference prisms. Moreover, the dense ferns and bracken, growing over a meter tall during summer, posed a risk of blocking the line of sight.
