Railway Monitoring with Dynamic and Static Wireless IoT Sensors

The structural integrity of rail and subway systems is of utmost importance for ensuring the safety and reliability of the transportation network. Regular monitoring of critical parameters such as track alignment, rail profile, and ballast void is crucial for detecting early warning signs of wear and tear, deformation, and misalignments that can compromise the safety of passengers and cause operational disruptions.

Advanced technologies such as dynamic displacement sensors, inclinometers, and tilt beams can be employed for real-time monitoring of these structural elements, such as:

Tiltmeter

It measures triaxial tilt changes, allowing it to detect movement in any direction, and it can be synchronized with the other Tiltmeters for more effective monitoring. It also monitors temperature, and it is wireless, plug-and-play and with a long-life battery.

Cant monitoring

Monitor the angle at which the track is tilted to one side (“cant”) to optimize the performance of the track and rolling stock, and ensure a safe and comfortable ride for passengers.

Tiltmeter

Twist monitoring

Monitor the change in elevation of the rail between the two ends of a section of track by placing two tiltmeters on two different sleepers, to prevent derails, plan proactive manteinance, and ensure the longevity of the railway system.

Tilt Beam

It consists of a series of wireless and battery-powered tiltmeters attached to a bar, which is then affixed to the structure to measure the degree of slope or tilt over a large area.

Vertical Settlement

Monitoring the downward movement of the track and its supporting structures (“Vertical Settlement”) for early detection of uneven tracks that can increase the risk of derailments or other accidents.

Dynamic Displacement Sensor

It measures small changes in the dynamic displacement or movement of structures, and it sends an alarm when a certain activation threshold is exceeded. It also monitors temperature, and it is wireless, plug-and-play and with a long-life battery.

Ballast Void Monitoring

Monitor the voids or empty spaces between the ballast stones that support railway tracks to ensure the safety and stability of railway tracks, maintaining proper drainage, reducing maintenance costs, and optimizing the use of ballast material.

Gateway

It acts as an intermediary, using LoRaWAN communication to collect data measured by the sensors and transmitting them to the Cloud Platform where it can be processed, analyzed, and acted upon. The device is Outdoor IP67 and is powered by PoE; optionally it can be powered by battery, with solar panel.
The Gateway Pro is equipped with LoRa, LTE, GPS and Wi-Fi antennas. Thanks to the dual LTE antennas, increased cellular coverage is possible. The device also implements a Wi-Fi hotspot and a builtin GPS for very precise synchronization and geolocation of the product. It is a very easy to set up thanks to the automatic APN and the included PoE adapter.

Wireless Triaxial Tiltmeter

It measures changes in tilt in three dimensions of a specific point of a structure. It can be synchronised with other tiltmeters, and it is wireless, battery-powered, and plug-and-play.

Slope Monitoring

Install tiltmeters on a post in the ground to monitor its inclination or subsidence over time to identify changes that could indicate a possible instability. This is particularly important in areas where there is a risk of landslides or earth movements.

Weather Station monitoring - LoRaWAN IoT

Single Channel Node + Weather station

The Weather station records various atmospheric conditions and weather-related variables, while the Single Channel Node makes the sensors suited for LoRaWAN wireless communication, sending alarms when a certain activation threshold is exceeded.

Monitor environmental factors such as temperature changes, humidity, wind, and precipitation to understand the impact that they can have on the health and performance of the structure.

Single Channel Node + Piezometer

The Piezometer tube measures the pressure or water level in an underground aquifer or other water-bearing formation, while the Single Channel Node makes the sensor suited for LoRaWAN wireless communication, sending alarms when a certain activation threshold is exceeded.

Water pressure and level

Monitor the interstitial water pressure and changes in groundwater level to detect changes in the surrounding soil and potential hazards to the railway.

Wireless Accelerometer SHM

It measures acceleration and frequency in three axes, and it can be synchronised with other Accelerometers SHM for Modal Analysis. It also monitors temperature, and it is wireless, plug-and-play and with a long-life battery.

Frequencies and modal shapes of the bridge deck

Starting from the data of multiple synchronized Accelerometers, it is possible to carry out the Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) of the deck, identifying the most significant vibration modes, monitoring the evolution of the modal parameters over time, identifying any anomalies or structural defects.

Tunnel Convergence

Cant parameter

The Cant is the transversal inclination of the railway expressed as the height difference in mm between two rails. The Cant is estimated using the angles provided by the Tiltmeters installed on the sleepers.

The Twist is the difference between two transversal levels measured separately at a predefined distance. To calculate Twist it is necessary to process the data collected by 2 consecutive Tiltmeters on the sleepers.

Vertical Settlement

The Vertical Settlement graph show the deformation profile of the track on the vertical plane.
Each point of the chart corresponds to the displacement values in mm provided by each sensor that forms the tilt-beam chain.

The graph shows the trend over time of data collected by any geotechnical probe connected to a communication node. The data collected by these probes typically include information about water pressure, temperature, soil deformation, and other factors affecting the stability of structures, foundations, and soil.

The Overlays tool allows you to superimpose data from different sensors on the same graph, in order to be able to compare the trends of the data of the structure in different positions and therefore to visualize the variations in inclination over time.

The Static Deflection tool allows you to evaluate the deformation of a structural element (for example a beam, a span of a bridge, etc.) under the action of a static load.
The Static Deflection tool is particularly useful for designers and engineers who need to assess the strength and safety of structures during the design phase, but it can also be used for structural monitoring during operation.

Modal Frequencies Tracking

Modal Frequencies Tracking is able to automatically monitor the variations of the vibrational modes over time. From the accelerometric or displacement data, it is possible to extrapolate the daily frequencies and modal shapes using the FDD (Frequency Domain Decomposition) technique.

Pk-Pk Displacement Probability Density Function

The histogram highlights the statistical distribution of peak-to-peak displacement values, in the selected time interval. In this way, it is possible to understand which is the average displacement of the structure and which is the uncommon one. An index of dispersion of the distribution with respect to its mean value is also provided.

Modal Frequency Clustering (MFC) displays similar modal frequency clusters in a structure.
